See What You Dont Know About Moses Olaiya (Baba Sala): Veteran King of Comedy As He Clocks 80 (Part 1)

In a country where upright role models are in short supply despite the appellation of being the most populous black nation on earth, a name that frequently pops out of the mouth of adults and youngsters alike when the question of the role model in the Nigerian comedy sector gets posed to them is nobody else, but the veteran, versatile Yoruba theatre practitioner and comedian, Baba Sala. PlaygroundTV reports.

Moses Adejumo Olaiya , born May 18, 1935,  is popularly known under the stage name of Lamidi Sanni, alias Baba Sala, is an Ijesha-born actor who can be rightly termed as the father and the king of Nigerian Yoruba films.

Not many know that he started out in life as a civil servant, a sanitary Inspector. After work, he would put off his sanitary inspection (Wole Wole) uniform and go for teaching part-time work in the evenings where he would go round town collecting daily thrift contribution — popularly called Ajo by Yorubas.

In the night, he would transform from a thrift collector into a highlife musician. Baba Sala started his career as a highlife musician. In 1964, he led a group known as The Federal Rhythm

Dandies. Interestingly, among his band's men was King Sunny Ade, who was his lead guitarist. Sunny Ade later left to become a music maestro and king of Juju music in Nigeria. According to the pioneer comedy actor, he started acting in 1960 in Lagos and since then had been bringing joy to his fans.

According to him, he never knew that comedy would bring the success he craved for as a young man: "I never knew comedy would become something that would take me that far. In those days people came to watch us at the National Theatre armed with analgesic tablets in readiness for a laughing session which could result in headache," he recalled.
"People would laugh until their heads get ached and tired. I have always wanted people to laugh and if I am on stage and people are not laughing, I will not be happy at all.

"I will make sure I do something that will make them laugh. In fact, in those days when we acted at the National Theatre with Ogunde on the other side of the theatre with his films, they preferred to come to Baba Sala side of the theatre. To come and watch our comedy."

He traced how he came about the name, 'Baba Sala,' which he said was chosen because he started out in a predominantly Muslim community. Though a Christian, he chose the names "Lamidi Sanni Oropo, Baba Sala."

Baba Sala advised youths, especially those who are interested in pursuing a career in acting to pursue their dreams and concentrate on developing their innate creativity with passion, and love which he believes will bring in the long run rewards.

'Our youths should be focused and dig deep in areas they know they have strength. They should identify the things they are passionate about; the drive from within will lead them to where they want to be. Acting is not easy but if you love what you do and have passion for it, it will reward you," he said.

Great works of creativity which have continued to make the appreciation of Moses Olaiya as a living legend and the ideal role model for young ones include: Orun Mooru (1982), Aare Agbaye (1983), Mosebolatan (1985), Agba Man (1992/Home video), Return Match (1993/Home video) and Tokunbo (1985, TV).

It will be recalled that Baba Sala, 74, became a full-time professional theatre comedian in 1969 after he did away with his Moses Olaiya Concert Party and came up with the more lasting Moses Olaiya International Alawada Theatre Limited, which travelled extensively round Nigerian cities and towns, and even the United States and the United Kingdom, with many brilliantly produced performances which contributed immensely to his popularity as a first-rate artist.

The advent of the first television station in Nigeria, The Western Nigeria Television (WNTV), equally impacted on the career of this maestro of hilarious comedy, for he was given one-year contract of drama sketches at the station based on the directive of the then legendary premier of the western region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who had at some occasion witnessed the enriching performances of Baba Sala.

It is on record that Baba Sala virtually wrote all his plays in which more often than not he was the lead character easily identified with his protruding belly, outrageously big bow tie, baggy trousers, pipe tobacco, big wristwatch, among many other embellished costumes and funny props.

An entrepreneur of enviable success, Baba Sala still provides leadership for his Alawada Group International Limited as the Chairman/Managing Director. Though the NANTAP honour warmed the cockles of his heart, Adejumo is not alien to such. He is a recipient of the national honour, Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), which was conferred on him by General Olusegun Obasanjo in 1978.

See What You Dont Know About Moses Olaiya (Baba Sala): Veteran King of Comedy As He Clocks 80

Continue from part 1.....

......But his journey to the apogee of his theatre career was not altogether swimmingly actualized. As is the case with every mortal, there was a time in his career when the maelstrom of a tragic development almost swept him into oblivion. That was the time when, quite ironically, the film, Orun Mooru which contributed richly to his fame, was wickedly pirated and sadly cost him huge financial and property loss. Donning a toothy smile, he equably told The Nation on Sunday: "The film, Orun Mooru, was kind of stolen from me for dubbing by one man. He pirated it and made it into a home video.

"It affected me seriously because we borrowed money to do the film. The practice then was to borrow money from banks to do our films. The films were often done abroad, unlike today where they use video. The money we used to borrow then was so huge that it required heavy collateral.

That was why my career almost took a dip. But that was how God wanted it. I now see it as a case of a woman killing a snake discovered by a man. It is neither here nor there. What really matter is that the snake is taken care of."

He is the craft of the creative mind behind the production of such films as Orun Mooru (1982), Are Agbaye (1984), Mosebolatan (1986), Agba Man (1990), Obe Gbona (1990), Return Match (1992), Diamond (1995), Ana Gomina (1998), among many other hilarious stage performances. But it was observed that none of Baba Sala's film or drama sketch was shown; not even one of the performers came close to mimicking the very character of Baba Sala.

My husband encourages me to flaunt my cleavage and wear mini skirts – Actress Funke Etti(Part 1)

Funke Etti is a popular Nollywood actress who featured mostly in Yoruba-speaking movies. She is one of the regular faces in the Yoruba click of the Nigerian movie industry. Funke Etti was at a time thought to be having an affair with Itele, another actor in the Yoruba movie industry, but she denied anything of such stating that they only had a working relationship.
In this interview, Funke shed more light on her career, fashion and husband..
Why is your face scarce on television?

It is a deliberate move and I have two reasons for my action. The first reason is piracy which is killing our industry. The second reason is because of my television programme which is taking a lot of my time.

Is it that acting is not so lucrative?

It is lucrative but we are branching out to other businesses so that we can have multiple sources of income. Also, piracy is killing our job. The last movie I shot, Owu Iyami, I spent about N2.8m on the movie but I did not make up to N1.5m because of pirates. I am thinking of taking my next project to the cinema. That is why most actors have something they do by the side like having a boutique or other businesses.

But what have you done to curb piracy?

On our part, we have done a lot. We have asked security agencies to come to our rescue but little has been achieved. I think it is only the government that can help us. We cannot fight the people in Alaba. I strongly suggest that government should shut them down and by doing so, piracy would reduce.

We learnt that some actors actually give the pirates their movies for a particular fee?

No; it is a lie. It is not possible. All that these pirates need is a copy of the movie. Once a movie is out, after a few hours, the pirates would have made thousands of copies. It is a very sad situation.

Can you tell us about growing up?

My childhood was not easy because I was an orphan. I had to squat with people to survive. I thank God for the way I was raised because it has really helped me in life.

But you have accomplished so much despite that, how did you do it?

God used some people to help me in life. People like my boss, Kolawole Olatunde and his wife. Also, I have an aunt that works at the censors board. She also contributed to my career.

Do you see yourself as a fashionable person?

Yes I believe I am quite fashionable. Everybody has their style and mine is to make sure I dress in a simple manner. I believe there is beauty in simplicity.

When going for an event, what are the things you consider?

My watchword is to be comfortable and also look very nice. I am not the type that would take extra measure to get dresses for an event. I go through my closet and I pick any dress that looks good on me.

What dresses do you feel comfortable wearing?

Most of the times, I love to wear mini dresses. I really love short dresses like mini-skirts. I also love wearing ankara tops with jeans. I feel so comfortable whenever I dress like that.

But some celebrities feel wearing ankara is local…

It is not. We need to appreciate what we have. I got used to wearing ankara because of my television programmme. Whenever I am on air, I always put on ankara fabrics. That is why I love ankara. Ironically, my husband does not like wearing ankara. He believes it is local but I normally make jest of him that he does not understand fashion. He loves wearing shirt and jeans.

Why do you love wearing mini-skirts and short dresses?

I love them because whenever I wear them, I feel very comfortable and sexy.

What is your fashion weakness?

I love shoes and bags and I find it hard to resist buying them whenever I walk into a shopping mall. As I speak with you, I have a lot of shoes and I am sure they would be more than a hundred pairs. Even though I have so many pairs of shoes, I still end up buying more. My bags are also many. I have over 60 bags of different shapes, sizes and colours.

Has motherhood changed your style in any way?

Not at all, I have a lovely son and he is my world. I love him so much. If I had known this is how beautiful motherhood is, I would have given birth since. Motherhood has not changed my fashion taste in any way. There is nothing I used to wear before I became a mother that I cannot still wear now.

What dresses does your husband like on you?

My husband knows that I love opening my cleavage and I love short dresses. So anytime he wants to shop for me, he tends to buy those kinds of dresses. However, he sometimes cautions me about exposing my body but he always concludes his sentence with ''I trust you." He knows that I love mini-skirts a lot.

But why do you like revealing your cleavage?

I do it very often. It is just my style. At times I just want to look provocative. I like looking provocative.

Do you style yourself?

When it comes to dressing, I wear anything that looks nice on me but for my make up, I have three make-up artistes that help me with my facials.

My husband encourages me to flaunt my cleavage and wear mini skirts – Actress Funke Etti(The Concluding part 2)

Read from part 1...

How often do you go to the salon?

I don't frequent at beauty parlours. I love looking natural and sometimes I make African hairdos like shuku, didi and the likes.

You don't feel odd when your friends are wearing brazilian hair and you do shuku?

I don't feel odd at all. I live a very simple lifestyle. Even if my friends wear gold and I wear local beads, I am very comfortable like that.

What would you never be caught dead wearing?

I don't think there is any dress I cannot pull off. Maybe wearing pant and bra on the street, that I cannot do. Even bikinis, I don't like wearing them whenever I go to swim.

Why do you love tattoos?

I have only one tattoo. The tattoo I have is a very small one and it is the picture of a star. Most of my friends in the industry have tattoos and one day, they came to me that we should go and get a tattoo. When we got to the shop, the artiste showed me a picture of a big tattoo he wanted to draw on my body. When he put the needle on my skin, I began shouting, telling them that I was not interested in having a tattoo anymore. When the artiste saw that I could not endure the pain, he said that he would draw something small and that was how I got the little star.

Can you still get another later in life?

Never, it is too painful. I don't think I can endure such pain again. After the pain I went through, I always imagine how people with many tattoos on their bodies did it.

Most people believe that fair girls easily get roles in films…

That is a huge lie. If you are fine but have nothing to offer, you cannot get roles. You have to be talented and have something to put on the table before you are given roles. It does not matter how beautiful you are. It is just a misconception.

You don't seem to like wearing jewellery…

It's part of my style, I like being simple. I have lots of jewellery but I hardly use them.

How about make-up?

Although I have three different make-up artistes that style me, it is only when I am on set or I have an outing that I make up. I like looking natural and because of that; I hardly use make-up.

But do you bleach your skin?

Often times I have heard people say I bleach but it is a lie. Don't mind them. They believe that once you are fair, you have bleached and I try to correct them that it is not so. I am naturally a fair skinned person.

How do you combine being an actress with your marital role?

It has not been easy but God has been my strength. I still find time to cook for my family. My husband's favourite meal is yam and egg and I always find time to cook other dishes for him....

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE NAKED TO ACT AS A PROSTITUTE –  ACTRESS SOLA SOBOWALE(Part 1)

Without any shred of doubt, Sola Sobowale is a veteran actress with huge talent. Many would remember her as Toyin Tomato in Wale Adenuga's hit TV series, Super Story.  She is the effervescent character who could blend from one volatile act to another.

Just when the movie viewing audience could not get enough of her she disappeared into thin air!

"Has Sola dumped acting?", was the question on the lips of many. Now she is back, doing what she knows how to do best and currently stars in a new series called 'Nectar' showing every Monday on AIT at 7:00PM with a repeat every Sunday at 9:30PM. In this exclusive interview, she talks about her absence from Nollywood, acting and more.

You've been off the movie scene for a while, are you fully back?

I never left, I only changed my base. Even when I was living in the UK, I still come home and do what I know how to do best. I still act and produce and presently, I'm developing a script.

What are you currently working on?

I'm on a soap opera called 'Nectar' and we've fully recorded up to Season 3. It is showing presently on AIT.

Are you working on any movie besides the soap?

I just finished one called 'Bose ye kori'

You've featured in over 200 films, how many of them have you produced?

I can't count, but I'll just say close to 50

You act with so much passion and conviction, what is your staying power?

First of all, I'm from a disciplined home. My late father was a retired school principal and my mom was a retired head teacher. We were taught that 'what is worth doing is worth doing well'. This is what I'm ordained to do, this is what I love doing and when you're doing something you love, you need to put in all your effort and energy. You must be focused, know your onions and know what you want to do. That is why you see me working like this.

Can you give a list of your best TV productions?

What would you say shot you to limelight?
I'm not going to say one, I would say all. You know why? Because if I don't love something, you can't find me there and I endorse what I do. It is not every script that comes to my table that I do because my own job is not for people to just come and see something that has no meaning. I get involved in stories that people would learn from and if you know me very well and have been following my stories and seen my movies, you will notice that everything I do has to do with family. I do proper drama and all this drama I do has to touch everybody; fathers, mothers, young ones, everybody. All I do is make-believe and at the same time it is what happens in our society both locally and internationally. I thank God for Super Story. A lady walked up to me in Abuja and said "Thank you very much Toyin Tomato, you saved my marriage" I said "what do you mean by that?" She said that her husband was like Suara and there was someone out there like proper Toyin Tomato that was taking him away. She then called her husband to watch Super Story and he settled down, watched, listened and saw the whole thing and he came back home. I'm very happy that I could touch that woman's life.

When I was in 'Mirror in the Sun' years back, it was popular. Village Headmaster was popular, Asewo to Re Mecca happens to be the pacesetter for home videos and then there's Super Story. I give kudos to Uncle Wale and I thank him so much for believing in me and bringing me on board for Super Story. I would say Super Story shot me to limelight because I had been working and no one had invited me out of Nigeria but with Super Story, I got an invitation to go to South Africa and Zimbabwe. It threw me everywhere; even Jamaicans saw me and said "Did you watch that show? This is Toyin Tomato".

You started acting when it was not this lucrative, have things really changed?

I will not say I started when there was no money.

But the money wasn't that high?

Yes, and today it's a shame that it is going back. We are praying to God that we need a Messiah and that is the government, they need to come in now. On our own, independently and individually, we've rebranded Nigeria. Years back, Nigeria was known as a country of 419, drug traffickers, etcetera, but when home video came, we rebranded Nigeria. They now know Nigeria for movies and drama and we are really popular, so this is a business that the Nigerian government must invest in.

Why do you think actors are paid peanuts in Nigeria?

When no one is helping and no one is sponsoring, no one wants to put their money down for anything. But  abroad you see a lot of people sponsoring; corporate bodies, banks and so on. If I want to get money now, I'll have to get my friends to assist me. I don't know how to do anything else besides this. I don't have a shop, so I can't stop no matter how bad it is. That is what is happening and it's not good. That is why you see Nigerian actors and actresses dying anyhow because you see us working too hard. Nobody is taking a break from work, nobody is going on holiday.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE NAKED TO ACT AS A PROSTITUTE –  ACTRESS SOLA SOBOWALE(Part 2,concluding part)

Read From part 1...this is the concluding part 2 of the interview wit Actress SOLA SHOBOWALE..

Why is it that they focus more on quantity instead of quality in Nigeria?

It's a pity because you know the answer yourself. We need to feed ourselves. I shot a movie about 2 or 3 years ago called Adayeba Ote Part 1, 2, 3. When I was tired of recording, I had spent about N5.8 million and we had not finished editing. After editing, I did not make up to 3 million. I thank God I did not borrow any money to do that, if I had borrowed money what would have happened to me? I lived in England, I do all the jobs and I bring the money back to Nigeria to shoot a movie because this is me, this is my passion. When you talk about quality, where are you going to get the money for the quality?

Are you really fulfilled as an actress?

I am not talking about money but you know something in life? When you enjoy doing what you love, you will be fine. I am fine but I need money to survive. I want all my effort to be crowned because I work very hard so I can't just be doing it in vain

Are all your children in Nigeria or in England?

They're in England, one is here. He has graduated already and he just recently got married

How does someone become good at acting?

First of all, you need to find yourself and believe in yourself. It is not a platform to showcase your beauty or for publicity, it is a profession. You need to treat it as a profession like a doctor or a lawyer or an accountant. When you know that this is your profession and you get there, you take things step by step. Don't say because you're beautiful you want to sleep around, how many would sleep with you? Don't forget that beauty is not on the outside, it's on the inside

I'm sure you get upset when you see actresses dress almost nude?

Many people have described you as an ageless beauty, is there any secret to maintaining your good looks?I don't get annoyed, the bottom line is this; nobody forces you to do anything. We need education and we need exposure. I'm a typical Nigerian woman, I love my Naija and our culture; there are some things we don't do, it's not in our culture. If we say we want to do it, we can do it in our house under our roof not in public because you get no respect doing that. Our producers and directors need to know that when you are acting as a prostitute,  you don't need to remove your dress to become a prostitute. You don't need to be touched to act as a grade A prostitute. I did Asewo to Re Mecca, the pace setter, fantastic; myself and Toyin Adegbola. I played the number 1 Asewo and I introduced Toyin's character to it. We didn't remove anything and it was talk of the town. When the producers know this, you will not see nakedness again. We should want people to respect us and respect this profession.

When you came to my house, how did you see me? I play a lot, I laugh, I smile and I am not a schemer. When you scheme, your head works 24/7 and before you know it, wrinkles are all over your face. Or if you lie and you want to keep lying, your head is never resting and it is ever thinking. Mine is, 'What you see is what you get' and I give glory to God and I thank God for my parents; they raised me very well and I got that from them

Apart from that Saudi Arabia scandal, is there any other one you've faced?

You need to tell me that scandal, tell me the whole story

They said that you smuggled cocaine and then they beheaded you in Saudi Arabia?

(Laughs) Do you believe in abracadabra? Whether I put my head back, they should tell me. If you give me the map of the world, I don't know where Saudi Arabia is. I am not a Muslim, I am a Christian, so what is my business in Saudi Arabia? I've never been there; I've never in my life seen cocaine. Yes, I watch movies; internationally I saw Al Pacino in Scarface and I saw our own Nigerian movies where we do cocaine, that's all. Where that scandal came from, how it came to be, still baffles me. I don't know why people would just sit down and fabricate stories to rubbish people's name, it is not fair.

What would you advice celebrities to do in order to keep their marriages?

What I would just tell everybody is, I know my home and I know myself. What happens in that other building; I don't know so we should not judge. Secondly, there is something called foundation. In education, when you go to secondary school and you come out of that school and make your papers, that is the foundation. Without that foundation, you can't get to university or further your studies. The foundation of marriage is love, endurance, honesty and to crown it all; keep it in the house

What more should people expect from Sola Sobowale?

Nectar; people should just watch out for Sola Sobowale because it's going to be a great comeback.

ACTRESS YETUNDE WUNMI RECOUNTS HER 2007 DRUG ORDEAL..SAYS ‘‘I SWALLOWED RAPS OF COCAINE WITH OKRO SOUP’

Before 2007, Nollywood actress Yetunde Wunmi had enjoyed rave reviews in the media for her acting prowess. Although she has since moved on but that bitter experience is what she cannot erase from her memory. Even after making a film (Egbogi Oloro) out of that sad experience, the memory still lingers in her mind till this day. In an interview with city people she talked about her experience.

Excerpts:

How did you join the movie industry?

I started through my boss, Mr Sunday Akinola, fondly called Mogaji Feyikogbon. that was in 1981. Then I was 20 years old. There were no home video then, it was just stage play and he owned a theatre group in ipaja.

What were the challenges you faced when you started?

My husband didn't like it. We had four kids but we lost one. So he told me to make a choice between him and acting. After much begging as I couldn't let go of my passion for acting, he threw me out. I left and rented a room apartment with my kids.

Did you try marriage again?

Yes I did. He also didn't like me acting. It took intervention of people before he allowed me back into acting.

Is any of your kids acting as well?

Yes, my first child. She's 38 and she acted in my first film after the cocaine saga.

How were you lured into cocaine business?

I was introduced by a friend. Then acting was no longer lucrative, she told me to do it and the money she told me I will collect was huge, not thinking of the consequences, I decided to give it a try. God loves me, maybe if I was successful maybe I would have continued. I haven't even left the airport before I was arrested

How did it happen?

I swallowed the pills with Okro. The dealer was happy I swallowed plenty. My heart was strong, when I got to the airport, they told me I had cocaine in me. After the scan, I was ordered that I should be handcuffed. It was then I knew I was in deep shit. I couldn't pray for 2days. It was when they took me to my house that I began to feel remorse. All my kids fainted on seeing me. They took my car the next day, newspapers carried the news, so people were reading. The first statement that came from my mouth was, God please vindicate me.

How did you know you would be vindicated?

It was from my dreams. I had it three times before the judgement day, the court room was filled to brim. I was sentenced to 3years imprisonment or a fine of N1 million. The money was contributed at the court room.

Did you see your friends after that day?

No, I didn't, till date.

Have you missed any opportunity because you are not educated?

If am opportune to be back to this world, I would choose education first before marriage. I wasn't opportune to go to school, my parents were separated, and I had to live with my dad's younger brother. I missed so many opportunities because of this, I couldn't act in Papa Ajasco and many other film.
